ReardonSmith Landscape were appointed to create proposals for a prestigious public realm space at the heart of Hyde Park Corner in the City of Westminster. The tight urban site posed a series of challenges with regards to the existing mature trees, underground network of utilities and services, the required flexibility for large crowds during summer events, along with planning constraints of townscape views and heritage. The response was to provide a ‘light touch’ design that worked amongst the existing tree roots to increase biodiversity, restore pedestrian priority and propose a ‘rain garden’ to create a Sustainable Urban Drainage System. The project also created a new active edge with pavement restaurant and dining for the adjacent Intercontinental Park Lane Hotel as part of the new garden square.
